Douglas Amport and John La Polla founded Bitter & Esters, the city’s first
do-it-yourself brewery, motivated by their knowledge and passion for brewing as equal parts art and science. Fueled by the desire to inspire, educate, and nurture the growing homebrew community in a friendly space, they conceived Bitter & Esters as a brew on premises location, complete with classes, and access to resources, as well as a supply store and creative hub for sharing brew tips and techniques.

We carry fermenters, hydrometers, and carboys; around 60 different malts (beechwood smoked, rye from MA, etc.) and extract syrups; and flavor enhancers from star anise, to bitter orange peel, to Dark Candi Sugar.
Douglas and John are incredibly attentive, supportive, and ready to answer any questions you might have. It’s great to have these guys in the neighborhood.
Best place for homebrew in NYC. Very helpful staff and good selection of stuff. Found everything I needed and got some help putting together a recipe.
